10 Tips For Cleaning Out Closets

I am super excited to share with you tips for organizing and decluttering your closets. We just started cleaning out our closets for spring and not a moment too soon. I did not realize how cluttered we let them get. It is such a freeing feeling to get rid of things! It is so hard to think clearly when there is stuff a mess everywhere.

These 10 tips we have picked up through the years and are proven to work. Here they are:

Start the process (the hardest part 😉) - your initiative will pay off
Take everything out of your closet - creating a “fresh palette”, it's gonna get ugly before it gets better
Wash down shelves and walls - use warm water with soap or cleaner
Have the mindset of only keeping what you need - also, the clothes that you want to keep but you don't use (a.k.a. special memories attached to clothes 😂) It would be a good idea to separate these from the clothes you will use. Pack away in an attic or separate storage place.
Sort by category- once you have everything out of your closet you will want to do this. For example, start with just folding the t-shirts.
Put one thing back at a time - this will help you gauge if it is "keep" or "get rid of".
Sort by color - I don't why, but there is something so satisfying with colors matching.
Don't feel rushed - it may take a few weeks- that's ok. It is better to take your time than to rush and put everything back messy.
Keep up with it - I am speaking to myself. It is so easy to get a little lazy and not put things back when doing laundry. You will also want to keep up with it on a year-round basis and try to do it two times a year.
