Winter Herb Gardening

My little project this weekend was some winter gardening. I have never tried doing this because of the cold weather, but the thought of cooking with fresh herbs in the dead of winter just seems unique. In this post, I will walk you through the seedling process. I did this same method for my summer garden, and it worked well.
I picked up some herb seeds- Sage, Oregano, Basil, and Cilantro
The seedling planter I used was a paper egg carton and a canning jar. All personal preference, but I will say that the paper egg carton is a nice divider and makes good compost after you are done using it.
The first step is filling the carton and jar with good soil. I just used some from my garden which is a mix of peat moss, planting soil, and compost. It was a pretty funny scene if you can imagine me scraping frozen soil in the backyard! 😂

After filling up the containers, the next step is getting the soil moist for the seeds. Before I could do this I brought the containers inside. There were ice crystals in the soil! After the soil got warmer inside I poured warm water over the soil. In order for the seeds to germinate it has to be decently wet.

You will use your finger to make a small hole in the wet soil. Sprinkle in the seeds and cover with the soil on the edges. Look at the back of the seed packets for how deep to plant the seeds. It varies from plant to plant.

For an added special touch I made some calligraphy labels. Also, I will know which herb is which! 😉

The next part is important: keeping the seeds warm and watered. The seeds will come inside. I put it on top of our refrigerator. This may sound weird, but the top of the fridge is a warm, yet consistent temperature.

I will keep you posted. Hopefully, there will be sprouts within a few weeks. Just remember to keep them watered and warm! I am already imagining using these fresh herbs while cooking!
Luke 8:14-15 (NIV)
The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
Today, friend, remember to stay firmly planted in God's truth.
We are rooted in his good, sustaining soil.
We grow by his everlasting LIGHT and LOVE.
May you be encouraged today to grow in the LORD. Let us not be weighed down by the world's distractions and burdens. We are children of the LIVING GOD!
Until next time,
Ava
